Following our successful debut at the Broadstairs Blues Bash in February, we've been building our repertoire and focusing our attention on songs that involve the full choir and don't require solo singers. We started the year well with four new members; unfortunately, three of them have dropped out. There is a fair bit of learning involved and it doesn't suit everyone. We did our second concert in June and it was very successful. I'm pleased with our new repertoire. We have got a good balance of secular and sacred songs; and everyone is singing. We'll taking a break for the summer holidays and, when we return in September, we'll be working on our Christmas programme and getting songs ready for the Blues Bash on 22nd February.
What's in a name?
When the Fisk Jubilee Singers were formed in America in 1871, their aim was to bring Spirituals and Gospel music to a wider audience. This is also our aim and so it seemed sensible to adopt that name for our choir. Since 2010 we were called: Thanet Community Gospel Choir. A long name that people frequently got wrong. Also, we want to establish our identity as a performing group. We're very proud to perform Christian songs but we also perform plenty of secular music. We're inspired by the roots of Gospel music and the branches. All of our music has the common aim to be uplifting and inspiring. This is the principle that guides Thanet Jubilee Singers.
